She tells the soldier that Great-Aunt Birte died of typhus, a highly contagious disease. If you get Typhus, you couldn't heal it back then. It was like a death sentence. Anyway, Mama said that the doctor said some of the germs might still be active, and if they open the casket, they all might get typhus.
